SILICON CARBIDE

Silicon Carbide (SiC) also known as carborundum is a compound of Silicon & Carbon. It occurs in nature as the extremely rare mineral moissanite. Grains of silicon carbide can be sintered together to form very hard ceramics that are widely used in applications requiring high endurance such as car brakes, car clutches & ceramic plates in bullet proof vests. Pure SiC is colorless. The brown to black color of Industrial silicon carbide results from Iron impurities. The high sublimation temperature of SiC makes it useful for bearing & furnace parts. Silicon Carbide, dissolved in a basic oxygen furnace used for making steel, acts as a fuel. The additional energy liberated allows the furnace to process more scrap with the same charge of hot metal.

Properties: Extreme hardness, high temperature resisting, chemically inert, radiation resisting, high electrical and thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion. It’s Moh’s hardness is 9 – 9.5.
Application: Widely used in the field of abrasive & cutting tools, foundry cubicles (used for holding molten metal), composite armor & ceramic plates of bullet proof vests, support & shelving material in high temperature kilns, Automobile parts such as disc brakes, lightning arrestors, LEDs, Electronic circuit devices.
